A Darker Sea Master Commandant Putnam and the War of 1812【電子書籍】[ James L. Haley ]

The second installment of the gripping naval saga by award-winning historian James L. Haley, featuring Commander Bliven Putnam, chronicling the build up to the biggest military conflict between the United States and Britain after the Revolutionーthe War of 1812.

At the opening of the War of 1812, the British control the most powerful navy on earth, and Americans are again victims of piracy. Bliven Putnam, late of the Battle of Tripoli, is dispatched to Charleston to outfit and take command of a new 20-gun brig, the USS Tempest. Later, aboard the Constitution, he sails into the furious early fighting of the war.

Prowling the South Atlantic in the Tempest, Bliven takes prizes and disrupts British merchant shipping, until he is overhauled, overmatched, and disastrously defeated by the frigate HMS Java. Its captain proves to be Lord Arthur Kington, whom Bliven had so disastrously met in Naples. On board he also finds his old friend Sam Bandy, one of the Java's pressed American seamen kidnapped into British service. Their whispered plans to foment a mutiny among the captives may see them hang, when the Constitution looms over the horizon for one of the most famous battles of the War of 1812 in a gripping, high-wire conclusion. With exquisite detail and guns-blazing action, A Darker Sea illuminates an unforgettable period in American history.

Beneath the Moors and Darker Places【電子書籍】[ Brian Lumley ]

In addition to his stellar Necroscope series, Brian Lumley is highly regarded for his short fiction, for which he has won the British Fantasy Award. Beneath the Moors and Darker Places, a companion to The Whisperer and Other Voices, collects nine lengthy exemplars of the best of Lumley's short works, many of them unavailable for decades in any form.

The Cthulhu Mythos of the immortal H.P. Lovecraft provides inspiration for much of Lumley's work, including "Dagon's Bell" and "Big C," both included here. The explosive creation of a new volcanic island off Iceland in 1967 led to "Rising with Surtsey," a homage not just to Lovecraft but to the great August Derleth. "David's Worm"--which takes an interesting view of "you are what you eat"--was published in a Year's Best Horror Stories and later adapted for radio in Europe.

The collection also includes the macabre "The Second Wish," published here for the first time with the author's original, intended ending, and "The Fairground Horror," first published in The Disciples of Cthulhu twenty-five years ago and not seen since save for a small press edition.

The title tale, Beneath the Moors, a complete short novel, has been unavailable in the United States since its first publication by Arkham House in the early 1970s. It is considered to be one of Lumley's strongest short works; Tor is proud to restore this and the other pieces in this volume to Lumley's growing readership.

At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

A Room with a Darker View Chronicles of My Mother and Schizophrenia【電子書籍】[ Claire Phillips ]

A daughter breaks the family silence about her mother’s schizophrenia, reframing hospitalizations, paranoia, illness, and caregiving through a feminist lens.

Claire Phillips’ elegantly written and unflinching memoir about her mother, an Oxford-trained lawyer diagnosed in mid-life with paranoid schizophrenia, challenges current conceptions about mental illness, relapse and recovery, as well as difficulties caring for an aging parent with a chronic disease. Told in fragments, the work also becomes a startling reflection on the evolution of feminism as seen through mother-daughter relationships.

Only with her mother’s final relapse at age 73 did the author begin to tell this story, first in Black Clock magazine, an essay for which she received a Pushcart nomination and notable mention in The Best American Essays 2015.

Tourism, Land Grabs and Displacement The Darker Side of the Feel-Good Industry【電子書籍】[ Andreas Neef ]

This book examines the global scope of tourism-related grabbing of land and other natural resources.

Tourism is often presented as a peaceful and benevolent sector that brings people from different cultural backgrounds together and contributes to employment, poverty alleviation, and global sustainable development. This book sheds light on the lesser known and much darker side of tourism as it unfolds in the Global South. While there is no doubt that tourism has been an engine of economic growth for many so-called developing countries, this has often come at the cost of widespread dispossession and displacement of Indigenous and non-indigenous communities. In many countries of the Global South, tourism development is increasingly prioritised by governments, businesses, international financial institutions and donors over the legitimate land and resource rights of local people. This book examines the actors, drivers, mechanisms, discourses and impacts of tourism-related land grabbing and displacement, drawing on more than thirty case studies from Latin America and the Caribbean, sub-Saharan Africa, South and Southeast Asia, the Middle East and the Southwest Pacific. The book provides solid grounds for an informed debate on how different actors are responsible for the adverse impacts of tourism on land rights infringements, what forms of resistance have been deployed against tourism-related land grabs and displacement, and how those who have violated local land and resource rights can be held accountable.

Tourism, Land Grabs and Displacement will be essential reading for students and scholars of land and resource grabbing, tourism studies, development studies and sustainable development more broadly, as well as policymakers and practitioners working in those fields.

The Dolphin Girl and the Darker Side of Things【電子書籍】[ Edward G. Kidder ]

The Dolphin Girl and the Darker Side of Things

By: Edward G. Kidder

Jessica Kingsbury, a stunningly beautiful young woman, is trying to distance herself from the terribly tragic events life dealt her at a much younger age; events resulting in a criminal conviction, incarceration, mental institutionalization, violent physical abuse, and long-term state-mandated supervisions. Jessica interacts with a host of elements and people in a small rural town, all of whom are pulling at her in a different direction, each for different reasons. A mature dedicated clinical psychologist, with matrimonial problems of her own, Dr. Jackie Fenton, Jessica’s lead clinical doctor, is trying to balance professional ethnics with very unorthodox curative procedures. She struggles with bizarre human elements in this true-to-life, hard-hitting, fast-moving saga of human drama. She must use outlandish elements and the dynamic energy of a tough, erotically inclined city police sergeant, his controlling assistant district attorney girlfriend, Jessica’s obstinate and determined father, and takes career-ending chances for the ultimate betterment of her client, Jessica, all the while dealing with her own latent sexual attraction to a random step-in hero who takes it on himself to help Jessica in any way he can; placing himself in the middle of the extravaganza. This story starts with the seemingly random collision of people and elements meshed together like gears in a recklessly fast-spinning machine; quickly loses control and rushes toward to an ever-uncertain conclusion affecting everyone that is touched by or gets involved with the darker side of “The Dolphin Girl.”

About the Author

Edward G. Kidder was born and grew up in a small midwestern US city. Raised by great-grandparents, he and a younger brother were on their own from an early age. The author was a restless and uninhabited kid, didn’t develop much of an academic attitude until later in life. Mechanically inclined from an early age, he was always mesmerized with speedーfast motorcycles, fast speedboats, fast cars, fast airplanes, and contestably fast women. He holds an AS Degree in Electronics; a business degree from the American Banking Institute; is a Veteran NCO, Army National Guard Member; built and rode many chopper motorcycles; raced dirt track stock cars; owns and manages several small businesses and commercial properties; served four years in Elected Public Office; managed several state and local political races; a long-time Private Pilot and high-performance aircraft owner, he is now a retired State Corporation Commission, Oil & Gas compliance officer. The author has been writing short stories and fiction novels since grade school. He uses his life experiences, including his two biological and four stepchildren, along with his three marriages, to base his real-life stories, usually with an unexpected twist. Basing from a one-room cabin on a private lake in the heart of Osage County in northern Oklahoma; he and his dog travel several months each year in a Sprinter motorhome, roaming the mountains and the beaches, chasing the seasons; and still writing every day. The Dolphin Girl and the Darker Side of Things is his first published novel.

The Darker Side of Family Communication The Harmful, the Morally Suspect, and the Socially Inappropriate【電子書籍】[ Thomas Socha ]

This volume advances theory and research by presenting original, empirical studies as well as theoretical and methodological overviews on dark family communication processes.
Taking an interdisciplinary and international approach, the volume includes contributions from the most respected scholars in their specialty areas. It is the first published work on the dark side of family communication scholarship to include critical theorizing. This makes it an important contribution to family communication research in general and dark side work more specifically. Such chapters examine how gender, race, class, and sexual orientation impact and are impacted by dark family communication. In addition to a micro, interaction-based exploration of how social location and dark family communication processes intersect, some chapters offer more social critiques of dark family communication (and how it is socially constructed) at a macro-level.
The volume is intended for scholars, researchers, and graduate students interested in the dark side of family communication and family dynamics. It is also well suited for advanced undergraduate or graduate courses in family communication, dark side of family communication, family processes, family dynamics, family conflict, and family stress and coping.
