Bertrand Russell non ? stato solo un grande logico matematico. ? stato anche un pensatore politico che molti suoi esegeti hanno voluto inscrivere nel firmamento del socialismo liberale, ossia di un socialismo che svolge e non capovolge gli assunti del liberalismo. Tuttavia si tratta di un errore di prospettiva, di un equivoco, che il libro aiuta a correggere, smentendo questa specie di scivolo che lascia placidamente trascorrere dal liberalismo al socialismo. Ricorrendo anche a citazioni testuali ? alle quali troppo spesso ? stata data la sordina ?, Gaetano Pecora dimostra che nel pensiero di Russell tra le due cose, tra il liberalismo e il socialismo, c’? la rottura, c’? il salto che ne strapazza i ragionamenti e lascia nel lettore un’impressione divisa. Divisa soprattutto quanto al socialismo che, per le suggestioni anti-proprietarie cui Russell pi? volte cedette, si pone in cruda alternativa con quel liberalismo che pure fa bella mostra di s? in altre parti del suo magistero. In questo senso Russell si posiziona effettivamente tra il liberalismo e il socialismo; sta tra l’uno e l’altro perch? in bilico su un equilibrio precario di pensieri che spesso stridono tra loro. Stesso discorso per l’etica. Il liberalismo di Russell canta su ogni tono quando ? irrorato da una vena scettica che lo fa sospettoso del Bene e del Giusto. Solo, per?, che a un certo momento anche questo scetticismo si ingorga con la tentazione di procurare un fondamento oggettivo, e perci? stesso assoluto, alle scelte politiche.
