Detours - From Maple Leaf to Olive Branch is a coming-of-age memoir about a young Canadian's journey to reconnect with his Italian heritage while pursuing his dream of becoming a doctor. Set against the backdrop of two distinct cultures, the story traces his efforts to explore his roots and embrace the traditions of his ancestors. From the snow-covered landscapes of Canada to the sun-drenched hills of Italy, he immerses himself in the richness of Italian life, uncovering a profound sense of belonging.

During his time in Italy, the young man experiences the intoxicating rush of falling in love with a local girl who embodies the passion and warmth of the place he has come to cherish. Their relationship blossoms amidst the ancient cobblestone streets of Padova, becoming a catalyst for his personal growth. However, as his time in Italy draws to a close, he faces the bittersweet reality of leaving not just a country but also a piece of his heart behind.

Detours - From Maple Leaf to Olive Branch is a story of self-discovery, cultural awakening, and the transformative power of embracing one's identity. It reminds us that understanding where we come from can illuminate the path ahead, bridging the gap between two worlds to forge a future all our own.

Foreword
Sometimes, life needs a birthday cake crowded with candles to show you what's missing. There I was, watching my son count the wax forest sprouting from the frosting, his questions about my youth hanging in the air like smoke signals. All those stories, packed away in memory's attic, were waiting to be dusted off and held to the light.
Then came the phone call, a voice from the past pulling at threads I thought long buried. Funny how old friends can bridge decades with a hello, making yesterday feel close enough to touch.
Memory's a peculiar thing. You think you've forgotten, but it's all there, waiting. Like Padova's ancient streets, worn smooth by centuries of feet, each stone holds its own story. Writing this memoir, I learned you don't need Doc Brown's DeLorean to time travelーjust a blank page and the courage to fill it.
Frank McCourt taught me that. His "Angela's Ashes" showed how even the most challenging times can shine with truth and laughter. I'm no McCourt, but I learned from him that honest words carry their own kind of grace.
The story of Padova wasn't just about becoming a doctor. It was about finding myself in the spaces between what I was and what I hoped to be. Every detour, every zigzag led somewhere true, even when the path seemed lost.
These pages are more than memories now. They're a map of sorts, marking the distance between a young man clutching a suitcase in a foreign station and the father watching his son count candles. Time bends like thatーyesterday and tomorrow meeting in today's words.

Excerpts
"Italy spread before me like a promise Canada couldn't keep. The irony wasn't lostーmy father had chased American dreams of golden streets, yet here I was, returning to the land of my birth to become what I couldn't in Toronto: a doctor."

"Back home, a line was sacred territory, a silent covenant among strangers bound by the shared religion of patience. Try cutting in line at a Toronto post office and you'd witness Canadian rage in its purest formーthe kind that manifests not in shouting but in devastatingly polite comments designed to make you question your upbringing. "

"Mid-twenties. It creeps up on you, that feeling. Like a little niggle in your tooth, you don't notice it at first, but then it starts to bother you... But underneath it all, a different kind of uneasiness was stirring, a quiet ache that the textbooks couldn't soothe."

A smoldering debut novel about a young mother in an Orthodox Jewish community of Los Angeles whose quest for authenticity erupts in a passionate affair following a night of wife swapping Rina Kirsch is a young mother and Modern Orthodox Jew in the Pico-Robertson neighborhood of Los Angeles. Dutifully keeping to the formidable expectations of a traditional household connects Rina with generations past and those to come. But a contradiction burns at her center: Rina is an atheist. She is also stymied in her life and marriage. Hoping to reinvigorate their relationship, Rina's husband convinces her to partake in a night of wife swapping with other Orthodox couples. Rather than preserve her marriage, however, the swap plunges Rina down a heady path that begins with a rekindled passion for painting and culminates in an intoxicating affair with Will Ochoa, her married art teacher. Clandestine rendezvous and stolen moments of ardor awaken Rina to an existence beyond the confining parameters of tradition, offering a glimpse at the possible life she left behind in the olive groves of her youth. As the blush of erotic thrill comes into sharp contrast with the complications of living a secret life, Rina must decide if it's worth sacrificing everything she's ever known to fully inhabit the uncharted landscape unfolding before her, one where her needs take precedence. Told in the fevered tenor common to both lust and religious devotion, Olive Days is an unforgettable story of the agonizing choices women make to balance duty against desire.

Why are we so hard on ourselves when everyone else thinks we're wonderful? Walt Whitman, Marlene Dietrich and Bill Clinton all have had admiring things to say about Canada. At the same time, some of our patriots--including Northrop Frye, Margaret Atwood and Pierre Trudeau--are harsh critics.

David Olive has collected a witty and whimsical book of 600 quotations that show how critical Canadians are--and always have been--of themselves, and how foreigners are usually unstinting in their praise of Canada.

Canada Inside Out is a browser's delight and a feast of canny Canadiana. Perhaps we'll never figure ourselves out, but David Olive lets us revel in the sheer joy of our contradictions.

After graduating at the top of my police academy class, I was given the opportunity to put on a police uniform and serve those around me. I had a blast. Until the inevitable happened. During that time, I experienced what no person ever wants to go through--sexual harassment and, finally, sexual assault by my own brothers in blue. While I loved my line of work (and I still do), it nearly broke every fiber of my being for years. Yet I believe that God is going to use that experience to help others heal.

My story is not over. My dreams are not completed. God still has a purpose for my life. It has been a long journey. It has taken many years to fully understand this from the trauma I faced as a police officer, but God. Through the sullen ashes of past trauma, beauty will arise through the power of Christ. My hope is that my story can raise awareness of sexual harassment in the workplace. More so, I hope every survivor of sexual assault can find true healing that only comes from God. You may have a dark past, but you can still have a bright future. May you find your faith in God and a complete healing through my scars.
