Ghosts in the SchoolyardRacism and School Closings on Chicago's South Side【電子書籍】[ Eve L. Ewing ]

楽天Kobo電子書籍ストア

“Failing schools. Underprivileged schools. Just plain bad schools.”

That’s how Eve L. Ewing opens Ghosts in the Schoolyard: describing Chicago Public Schools from the outside. The way politicians and pundits and parents of kids who attend other schools talk about them, with a mix of pity and contempt.

But Ewing knows Chicago Public Schools from the inside: as a student, then a teacher, and now a scholar who studies them. And that perspective has shown her that public schools are not buildings full of failuresーthey’re an integral part of their neighborhoods, at the heart of their communities, storehouses of history and memory that bring people together.

Never was that role more apparent than in 2013 when Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced an unprecedented wave of school closings. Pitched simultaneously as a solution to a budget problem, a response to declining enrollments, and a chance to purge bad schools that were dragging down the whole system, the plan was met with a roar of protest from parents, students, and teachers. But if these schools were so bad, why did people care so much about keeping them open, to the point that some would even go on a hunger strike?

Ewing’s answer begins with a story of systemic racism, inequality, bad faith, and distrust that stretches deep into Chicago history. Rooting her exploration in the historic African American neighborhood of Bronzeville, Ewing reveals that this issue is about much more than just schools. Black communities see the closing of their schoolsーschools that are certainly less than perfect but that are theirsーas one more in a long line of racist policies. The fight to keep them open is yet another front in the ongoing struggle of black people in America to build successful lives and achieve true self-determination.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

Closing the School Discipline Gap: Equitable Remedies for Excessive Exclusion (Disability, Equity, and Culture Series)【楽天海外直送】【英語の本】【洋書】

Excellent Imports

Closing the School Discipline Gap: Equitable Remedies for Excessive Exclusion (Disability, Equity, and Culture Series)Educators remove over 3.45 million students from school annually for disciplinary reasons, despite strong evidence that school suspension policies are harmful to students. The research presented in this volume demonstrates that disciplinary policies and practices that schools control directly exacerbate today's profound inequities in educational opportunity and outcomes. Part I explores how suspensions flow along the lines of race, gender, and disability status. Part II examines potential remedies that show great promise, including a district-wide approach in Cleveland, Ohio, aimed at social and emotional learning strategies. Closing the School Discipline Gap is a call for action that focuses on an area in which public schools can and should make powerful improvements, in a relatively short period of time. Book Features:* Shows the academic and social costs of excessive disciplinary exclusion.* Examines school policies and practices that lead generations of African-American and Latino youth into the school-to-prison pipeline.* Offers evidence-based interventions for reducing excessive and disparate out-of-school suspensions.* Connects the research presented to real changes that can be made to federal, state, and district policies. Contributors include Robert Balfanz, Jamilia Blake, Dewey Cornell, Jeremy D. Finn, Thalia Gonzalez, Anne Gregory, Daniel J. Losen, David M. Osher, Russell J. Skiba, Ivory A.
